What to visit:
► I bastioni
Interesting and panoramic rampart with several fortifying dirt
elements: firing edge, wattle posts, crossbar protecting the upper
square.
► San Martino
Church
This church was presumably built on top of a pagan temple. Inside
we can find numerous frescoes among which the “Holy Spirit
Ascension” painted by Saoncella. The simulacrum within the
Madonna’s chapel is also remarkable.
► The Madonna
of Frassino Sanctuary
This sanctuary, located about two kilometres from Peschiera near
lake Frassino, has housed a small statue of the Madonna, believed
to be miraculous, for over four centuries. It is said that in 1510
a farmer working an a field was saved from a snake by the
intervention of the Madonna after he had called for her. The snake
fled and a statuette of the Madonna with child appeared,
surrounded by a bright light, in the braches of an ash tree
(frassino). The farmer took the statuette home with him, but
shortly afterwards it reappeared between the branches of the ash.
It was then decided to have a sanctuary built on the site by the
Franciscan monks in 1518. The façade of the church, which has been
restored several times, dates from the XVI Century.
Inside the sanctuary are ten chapels with frescoes by Veronese
artist Paolo Farinati (1524-1606). One of the chapels houses the
miraculous statuette, set on a branch of the original ash tree.
► Roman
excavations and remains I-IV th century
In the northern part of the area, one can recognize a dwelling
place which looks out onto a paved courtyard, with rooms paved in
different ways (mosaics, beaten floor of stone chips and crushed
terracotta) arranged around a stone-paved atrium.
► Frassino Lake
One of the most interesting wetlands around Peschiera is the small
Lake Frassino, a natural wildlife reserve. The natural fauna has
been preserved undisturbed, every year it hosts thousands of
wintering ducks. For this reason, in 2000 the European Union
recognized the Frassino Lake as a site of community importance
(SIC) and a special protection zone (ZPS).
► La Palazzina
storica
The palace is located in the Catullo Park and is one of the most
important monuments of the town. This is where, on November 8th
1917, the famous inter-allied convention took place, during which
the Italian king Vittorio Emanuele III decided the continuous
resistance on the Piave front. Now in the convention room there
are antiques of the Risorgimento campaigns and World War I.
